World Health Organization Confronts Major Workforce Reduction After United States Financial Pullout

This global public health organization revealed plans to reduce its workforce by nearly a fourth – amounting to over 2,000 positions – before the middle of 2026.

Financial Shortfall Prompts Substantial Restructuring

The move follows after the United States, previously the organization's biggest donor, pulled out financial support earlier this year.

The US government had been contributing approximately eighteen percent of the agency's overall budget, causing a significant financial shortfall.

Projected Staff Reductions

Based on internal estimates, the workforce is expected to drop from 9,401 positions in January 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.

The decrease of 2,371 positions includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and regular departures.

"The past year has been one of the toughest in our history, while we have navigated a challenging but essential process of prioritization and restructuring," commented the organization's leader.

Financial Gap Remains

The Geneva-based body now faces a budget gap of $1.06bn for the upcoming period, amounting to almost a quarter of its required budget.

The figure represents an improvement from a prior estimated shortfall of $1.7bn reported in spring.

Excluded Finances

The budget calculations do not include an additional $1.1bn in potential contributions from ongoing discussions with various contributors.

The representative for the organization noted that the present unsecured portion of the budget is in fact lower than in earlier periods, crediting this to several reasons:

  • A smaller total budget size
  • The launch of a fresh fundraising campaign
  • Higher in participating countries' required contributions

This realignment process is currently approaching its end, allowing the agency to move forward with a reshaped operational model.
