The former president Threatens Relocation of 2026 World Cup Fixtures from Massachusetts, Olympics from California

Donald Trump has yet again stated he would urge FIFA to relocate 2026 World Cup games from a venue based on the local governance, with the Boston region now being the latest targeted location to encounter such threats from the American leader. Moreover, Trump remarked he would contemplate comparable measures against LA for the upcoming Olympic Games due to possible public safety risks.

Jurisdictional Limits and Informal Leverage

While Trump does not have formal power to personally cancel either event, he can apply pressure the respective governing bodies in charge of each competition to change venues.

Setting for Statements

These comments were made during a news conference with Argentinian president Milei, who was at the presidential residence following the revelation of a massive rescue package for the Argentine country. Toward the end of the meeting, a reporter questioned Trump about a recent unauthorized gathering in Boston where authorities were attacked and a cruiser was burned. The correspondent also asked if the situation could result in the removal of tournament responsibilities for the 48-team World Cup.

“I would take them away,” he said regarding the FIFA World Cup fixtures, set to be staged at Gillette Stadium. “She is poor … she’s radical left, and they are taking over areas of Boston. That is a significant statement, don't you think?”

Urban Disturbances and Ideological Perceptions

Public disruptions, a digitally organized trend where participants assemble on urban roads late at night to perform stunts, have become a ongoing nuisance in US urban areas since the Covid-19 pandemic closures. Latest incidents have become aggressive in Massachusetts, specifically in Boston. Nevertheless, these gatherings are typically not considered associated with any distinct ideological group.

“When a mayor is performing poorly, and I perceive exist dangerous circumstances, I would call the organization's president, who is phenomenal, and say let’s move it to another location,” the former president commented on Tuesday. “He will do that. He may not enjoy to do it, but he'd agree. Very easily, he’d do it.”

Political Connections

The organization's head has made no secret his efforts to be visibly associated with the US leader before the upcoming World Cup, planned to be staged in numerous American venues across the US along with a couple in Canada and multiple in Mexico. The head has been present at various White House gatherings, arranged for Trump deliver the FIFA club award after that tournament’s final, and has even delayed his FIFA's internal meeting to travel with Trump on a visit to the Arab region earlier in 2025.

Previous Threats

Despite this, Trump from threatening the cancellation of World Cup games from additional American venues. On September 25, the Washington city and San Francisco came under similar criticism, with Trump claiming both locations were “run by far-left extremists who lack understanding what they are doing,” while criticizing the public safety of both areas and implying that games could be removed.

Organizational Statement

Victor Montagliani rejected Trump’s assertions when he responded subsequently at a gathering in London.

“This is the organization's event, FIFA’s jurisdiction, FIFA makes those decisions,” the vice-president said. “Respectfully to sitting presidents, football is bigger than any individual and soccer will endure their administration and their policies. That is the strength of football, that it is transcends a single person and more important than individual states.”

LA Games Warning

During the event, Trump’s response to a query about the Massachusetts city extended to a comparable warning regarding the LA Olympic event.

“If I believed the city was failing to be adequately ready, I would shift it to an alternate venue if I had to,” Trump stated. “For the Olympics I’d probably have to secure a alternative consent, but we'd proceed.”

Official consent Trump mentioned would need to come via the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The president, Kirsty Coventry, was elected to her role in spring and has so far not appear together with Trump, although she indicated that she would like a sit-down with the US figure at some point.

Further Comments

Trump also criticized Gavin Newsom’s response of recent California fires, remarking that a similar situation could cause the cancellation of the Games.

“If the governor is uncooperative, we will have to be strict,” he said.

His message was similarly direct for Boston.

“Boston better clean up their act,” he said. “That is I will say.”
