Former FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's attorney entered the plea on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

His attorney stated he would seek to have the legal matter dismissed for multiple factors including that his defendant, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was formally accused soon after the former president urged his top legal official to move forward against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the judge they intended to submit multiple petitions to terminate the case before a court case, arguing the government's case was spiteful and that a government lawyer was unlawfully appointed to take over the case.

James Comey's proceedings was first overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under pressure from Trump after his investigation into another rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

The former director seemed in positive mood as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his wife, Patrice Failor and offspring Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration recently fired.

Following the reading to the court state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he understood the allegations.

"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he told the court.

Background Context

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was terminated about several months into the former president's initial presidency as national leader. At the period, the director was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and the election effort.

During his tenure, the director sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was probing political contender the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Clinton were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors assert Mr Comey lied to the legislature during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he deceived the legislative body by stating he had not approved an individual at the FBI to release to journalistic entities details about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also charge James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, obstruct and delay" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

In a video James Comey posted to his online platform after he was accused, he said he was innocent and accused Trump of acting like a "dictator".

"Our household have known for years that there are consequences to opposing Donald Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he added. "Thus initiate a trial."

The accusations against Mr Comey emerged after Donald Trump published on online platforms insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and additional individuals.
