Courageous Rail Employee Receives Critical Wounds During Mass Stabbing Attack on Express Service

A courageous train employee who intervened to save passengers during a multiple stabbing incident on a express train has suffered critical injuries, police stated on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Event

CCTV footage reportedly shows the staff member trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between a city and Huntingdon in the county. Witnesses described a terrifying 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied passengers running through compartments.

The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for interrogation. Authorities declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Emergency Reaction and Consequences

The incident on the weekend resulted in 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have now been discharged from hospital.

A bystander filmed the individual brandishing a big knife and being shot with a Taser as he confronted police on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – especially the courageous member of train personnel whose family are being assisted by trained officers,” said a high-ranking police officer.

Union Reaction and Appeals for Action

Train unions were swift to praise employees and call for increased measures. One labor leader stated he would be “requesting urgent discussions with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the best available assistance, resources and robust protocols in operation”.

Another union representative encouraged the train operator and authorities “to move quickly to examine safety, to help the affected employees, and to ensure nothing like this occurs again”.

Operator Praised for Rapid Action

The operator who stopped the service at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been commended by association representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver did not halt the service in the middle of two stations where it’s obviously difficult for the emergency services to access, but he carried on traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the response was almost waiting,” explained a association official.

Additional Information

Authorities said they received the first emergency calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One witness described initially wondering if the situation was a Halloween joke, but soon realized from people's faces that it was serious.

Police have confirmed there is nothing to indicate the event was a terror-related attack and have requested the community to come forward with any further details.

Train operations on the impacted route are anticipated to have disruption until Monday, with passengers recommended to defer their travel where possible.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation are encouraged to contact police by sending a message a specific number with a reference code.
