2026 Declared the Year of the Frog Game.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a band of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. However, their visibility has markedly exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming appears particularly strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that often become a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a host of unique mechanics.

A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year yet.

If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be entering a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
